The number of children who have died from an outbreak of bloodstream infections in hospitals in three Mexican states has risen to 17, Mexican Health Minister David Kershenobich said.
“Unfortunately, 17 children have died. All of them were premature, with low birth weight. There was only one fatal case, a 14-year-old child,” the minister said when asked about the death toll from the outbreak.
The head of the Ministry of Health said that in addition to the state of Mexico, fatal cases have been recorded in hospitals in the states of Michoacan and Guanajuato.
On December 5, the Mexican Ministry of Health reported an outbreak of bloodstream infections associated with possible contamination of parenteral nutrition or the means for its use in four hospitals in the state of Mexico. An initial investigation indicated possible contamination of solutions from the company SAFE.
