Mexico national football team’s all-time leader and five-time World Cup participant Andres Guardado has announced his retirement from the game at the end of the current Mexican championship season.
Guardado’s club Leon will play its final regular season match away from home against Monterrey on Sunday, November 10. The 38-year-old midfielder’s team is in 11th place and three points behind the play-in zone; if they fail to reach it, Leon’s season will end.
“I want to publicly announce my decision to retire from football at the end of this season and to stop being a professional player after 19 years of playing. I thank the club’s president, Jesus Martinez, for giving me the opportunity to finish my career in Mexico. I know things didn’t work out the way we wanted, but I’m proud to belong to this club,” ESPN quotes Guardado as saying.
